International protection in practice: experience and challenges

On 28 July 1951 the United Nations Conference of Plenipotentiaries on the Status of Refugees and Stateless Persons adopted the Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. The Conference was convened under the UN General Assembly resolution 429 (V) of 14 December 1950. The Convention entered into force on 22 April 1954.

On 28 July 2021 the Academician Levan Alexidze Foundation dedicated academic discussion to the topic International protection in practice: experience and challenges.

Academician Levan Alexidze served as a member of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance in respect of Georgia for 12 years since the latter became a member state of the Council of Europe. Emphasising his contribution within the United Nations during 1970-ies to the establishment of international legal framework of anti-discrimination and protection of migrants, including refugees, as well as his work in the framework of the Council of Europe, the discussion was held with the participation of the International Protection Unit at the Migration Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, representatives of non-governmental organisations and academia.

The main directions of theory related to international protection, as well as universal and regional international legal instruments were scrutinized against analysing the state practice and established policies with the active involvement of the webinar participants under Ms Tamta Zaalishvili’s guidance.

 

From the beginning of 2021, the Levan Alexidze Foundation has been dedicating its events that promote human rights and democratic standards to the commemoration of the 95th jubilee of the late Levan Alexidze, a highly respected scientist, professor, public figure, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, founder of the International Law School of Georgia, Chief Adviser to the President of Georgia on International Law Issues, and Member of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences.
