Levan Alexidze Foundation concluded events celebrating the Women’s History Month by hosting a scientific conference

From the early 2021 the Academician Levan Alexidze Foundation is dedicating events promoting human rights and democratic standards to the 95th jubilee of the merited scientist, professor and public figure, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, the founder of the International Law school in Georgia Levan Alexidze, late Full Member of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences.

Professor Levan Alexidze contributed to numerous dimensions of establishing and implementation of international legal standards against discrimination. During 1970-1977 he served as a secretary of the United Nations Sub-commission on Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities and as a Director of Human Rights Department of the United Nations Secretariat. Professor Levan Alexidze also acted in a capacity of a secretary to the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly and a secretary to the Human Rights Commission along with serving as a Personal Representative of the UN Secretary General and an organizer of international events dedicated to variety of international legal aspects of human rights protection.

During 12 years following Georgia’s accession to the Council of Europe Professor Levan Alexidze contributed to the advancement of international legal framework against discrimination across Europe in the capacity of an independent member of the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI).

Elimination of discrimination and protection of human rights in different fields were the central topics of the research projects, results of which participants from different regions of Georgia presented in the framework of a conference Gender Equality and Women’s Rights in the Contemporary Discourse.

The Conference held on 27 March 2021 was a culmination event hosted by the Levan Alexidze Foundation in cooperation with the Training Center of Justice of Georgia, Georgian-American University (GAU) and TSU Gender and Law Chair to honour the Women’s History Month.

The Head of Human Rights Secretariat at the Administration of the Government of Georgia and the experts of this body, as well as the UN Women expert, together with the representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association, Analytical organisation Geocase, TSU, Georgian-American University, Innovations and Reforms Centre, making up the teams of discussants and the conference jury, engaged in discussions with the presenters of different panels concerted around fighting against gender based violence, the role of global pandemics in provoking violence against women, violation of women’s human rights during the Russia-Georgia war in 2008, gender aspects of international crimes, role of women in peace processes per the UN Security Council Resolution N1325, gender discrimination in planning infrastructure, feminisation of labour migration, women’s political rights, protection of rural women from discrimination, women’s rights and access to justice. The Founder of the Levan Alexidze Foundation Professor Marina Meskhi moderated the Conference.

The competent jury announced the research findings presented by Ana Mukhashvili to deserve the first place, announcing as the second best the results of a joint research by Mariam Kakhidze and Tamriko Nachkebia. The works presented by three individual speakers – Mariam Makhviladze, Lia Tcholadze and Gvantsa Dzidziguri were qualified as the third best, whereas Ana Tabukashvili earned Jury’s special prize.

The EWMI’s program funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) “Promoting Rule of Law in Georgia (PROLoG) Activity” and the Academician Levan Alexidze Foundation granted academic awards, Georgian and Oxford University Press publications from 2020-2021 and the respective certificates.
