a scientific conference commemorating the World Refugee Day
1951 Convention on the Status of Refugees: 70 years guarding the most vulnerable?
The World Refugee Day is commemorated by over 100 states around the globe since 2001. The celebration of this day in academia was made traditional in Georgia with Professor Levan Alexidze’s vigorous contribution throughout the years. The World Refugee Day scientific conference was held under his leadership in Georgia in June 2019 too. On 20 June 2021, the Levan Alexidze Foundation will host interdisciplinary scientific conference to endure the tradition.
This interdisciplinary scientific conference aims advancing research based informed academic discussion around the International Refugee Law, the role of International Humanitarian Law in the prism of forced international displacement and elimination of discrimination of those particularly vulnerable in the context of forced international displacement.
The conference will be addressing the following issues:
- A need for a new optional protocol to the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees?
- Global Compact on Refugees: a new impetus to the efficient implementation of the 1951 Convention?
- Common European Asylum System: still a work in progress?
- Council of Europe and asylum seeking women who had been victims of violence against women: a novel or newly interpreted approach?
- Georgia’s political approximation to the European Union and International Refugee Law
- Interrelations of International Refugee Law and International Humanitarian Law in the context of international protection
- Collision of state security interests and human rights protection needs in the process of seeking international protection: international standards and practice
- Refugees, state borders and the law
- The economic impact of international forced migration – a challenge for developed countries?
- Climate change and international forced migration: the interlinkages missing in law?
- The identification and eradication of the causes of international forced migration – the road to reducing forced migration
- Humanitarian crises and international forces migration: the causes and consequences
- Protection of rights of those fleeing internationally during pandemic: experience and prospects
- International legal standards and challenges of protecting rights of asylum seeking women
- Specific needs of children seeking asylum
- Social integration of persons with international protection status in recipient societies – conclusions from divergent practices
- Protection of the most vulnerable under the International Refugee Law: the analysis of the standards and practice
- Refugees, 1951 Convention and access to employment and healthcare
- Added value of international and domestic legal frameworks of forced international migration for the protection of human rights
- The UNHCR and persons in need of international protection
- The role of international institutions in the implementation of the 1951 Convention
- Domestic courts and the implementation of the 1951 Convention
- International Refugee Law and political processes
- Protection of Internally Displaced Persons and International Law
Representatives of academia, state institutions, non-governmental and international organisations working on international protection issues will participate in the interdisciplinary scientific conference.
The conference participants will be selected based on abstracts of no longer than 500 words. The consideration will be given to the degree of currency of the selected research topic, novel conclusions and practical importance of the research outcomes.

The conference will be held on 20 June, 2021, via zoom.
The selected three best paper presenters will be rewarded with academic awards, all the presenters at the conference will receive respective certificates.
