Levan Alexidze Foundation and Levan Mikeladze Diplomatic Institute dedicated a Conference to 31 July

On 31 July 1992, Georgia was admitted to membership in the United Nations, having received the recommendation of the Security Council of 6 July 1992.     

Until 31 July 2019, Academician Levan Alexidze was actively involved in developing Georgia’s international relations, and via his scientific and academic work vigorously participated in the development of international legal framework supporting international peace and security and protection of human rights. Professor Levan Alexidze, with an extensive working experience at the United Nations Headquarters in New York and Geneva, was among others drafting the documents disseminated as UN documents among the UN members following the restoration of Georgia’s independent statehood. These documents had been submitted to the United Nations Security Council throughout years on behalf of the State Commission of Georgia for the Investigation of the Policy of Ethnic Cleansing/Genocide carried out against the Georgian population in Abkhazia, Georgia. The Chairman of the Commission and the author of these reports was Levan Alexidze, the founder of the teaching and research of International Law in Georgia. The respective reports had been disseminated as UN documents.       

The 31 July 2021 Interdisciplinary conference Georgia and the United Nations: history and perspectives of cooperation addressed various aspects of cooperation between Georgia and the United Nations in the presence of Ambassador Mikheil Ukleba, MFA, as well as Ms Tinatin Bregvadze, Director of the Levan Mikeladze Diplomatic Training and Research Institute, Ms Nino Shekriladze, Head of the United Nations Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Giorgi Nanobashvili, Economic Development Team Leader at the UNDP Georgia, Prof. Dr. Marina Meskhi, the Founder of the Levan Alexidze Foundation and Prof. Dr. Ketevan Khutsishvili, Director of the International Criminal Law Centre at TSU.   

The purpose of the 31 July Conference was to support informed discussion around the cooperation of Georgia and the United Nations. The students of Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University, Tbilisi State University and Georgian-American University presented outcome of the research on various aspects of this cooperation. Among others the discussion concerted around the role of the UNOMIG in protecting human rights in Abkhazia, Georgia; significance of the recurrent UN General Assembly resolutions on the Status of internally displaced persons and refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia, and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia, Georgia. The issues pertaining to the work within the UN in respect of the possible commission of international crimes in the occupied territories of Georgia were also presented. Apart from discussing the role of the UN in promoting environmental democracy, as well as development of the alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in Georgia, the importance of cooperation with the UNDP and UN agencies in the prism of right to education during the COVID-19 pandemic, along with the UN CEDAW Committee and its monitoring as well as quasi-judicial functions were discussed among others.

From the beginning of 2021, the Levan Alexidze Foundation has been dedicating its events that promote human rights and democratic standards to the commemoration of the 95thy jubilee of the late Levan Alexidze, a highly respected scientist, professor, public figure, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, founder of the International Law School of Georgia, Chief Adviser to the President of Georgia on International Law Issues, and Member of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences.
