On 5 July 2021 the Levan Alexidze Foundation celebrated 95th jubilee of the merited public figure and scientist

On July 7, 2021, the informational agency “Pirveli Radio” published information about the celebration of the 95th jubilee of merited scientist and public figure by the Levan Alexidze Foundation on 5th of July. We offer the above statement unchanged:

“5 July is a day of birth of the merited scientist, public figure and a founder of International Law School in Georgia, co-author and one of the signatories of the Act on Restoration of Independent Statehood of Georgia, Academician Levan Alexidze. As of 2020, the Levan Alexidze Foundation established 5 July as International Law Day in Georgia. This Day is an important occasion for informed discussions around the values on which Academician Levan Alexidze founded the Georgian International Law School immediately after the restoration of the Independence Statehood of Georgia.

On 5 July 2021 the celebratory events dedicated to Levan Alexidze’s 95th jubilee were inaugurated by Professor Anne Peters, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law and Prof. Dr. Ketevan Khutsishvili, Academician Levan Alexidze’s former student and Director of International Criminal Law Centre at TSU established on his very initiative. The meeting attended by around 80 participants from Georgia and different European states and moderated by Dr. Saba Pipia, a Visiting Scholar at the Michigan State University, was dedicated to one of the central topics of Academician Levan Alexidze’ academic and practical work: How ‘Passportization’ Practices Can Affect Freedom of Movement in Breakaway Regions?

On 5 July 2021, the Levan Alexidze Tbilisi Academy of International Law was also launched. Up until 31 July 2021 participants of the Academy, which is organized in cooperation with the Georgian-American University, will have exceptional opportunity to acquire and deepen their theoretical and practical knowledge of selected contemporary issues of International Law.

On 5 July 2021 Irina Aghapishvili, one of the favourite students of Academician Levan Alexidze, dedicated to the 95th jubilee of her extraordinary teacher successful conclusion of her independent scientific-research work. The PhD study dedicated to the “Importance of ICSID’s case law for developing states: protection of foreign direct investments in Georgia” was evaluated by the Dissertation Council of the School of Law, Social Sciences and Diplomacy and assessed as excellent (summa cum laude) on this very day. Therefore, a day on which now Dr. Irina Aghapishvili was conferred a qualification of a Doctor of Law coincided with birthday of Academician Levan Alexidze. It shall be noted that Irina Aghapishvili and her scientific supervisor Prof. Dr. Ketevan Khutsishvili resolved to dedicate public defence to the 95th jubilee of the merited scientist, teacher and public figure, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, founder of International Law School in Georgia Academician Levan Alexidze. This initiative was fully supported by the Georgian-American University.

On 5 July 2021 an interdisciplinary conference Georgia and the United Nations: Cooperation Path and Perspectives was also launched. On 31 July 1992, the UN General Assembly, based on the 6 July recommendation of the Security Council decided to admit Georgia to membership of the United Nations. Until 31 July 2019, Academician Levan Alexidze was actively involved in Georgia’s international relations and his scientific and academic work contributed to the development of the international legal framework of the protection of international peace and security as well as human rights. On 31 July 2021 the Academician Levan Alexidze Foundationand the Levan Mikeladze Diplomatic Training and Research Institute will host a conference, which will work around three directions: Georgia’s cooperation with UN funds and specialised agencies; cooperation between Georgia and the UN for ensuring international peace and security; advancement of human rights protection via Georgia-UN cooperation.

Academician Levan Alexidze Foundation, in cooperation with the International Centre for Migration Policy Development, on 5 July 2021 announced 3rd Edition of already traditional Levan Alexidze International Law Moot Court Competition which was initiated in 2019 and will be held with the participation of teams from around 20 states in 2021.

From the beginning of 2021, the Levan Alexidze Foundation has been dedicating its events that promote human rights and democratic standards to the commemoration of the 95th jubilee of the late Levan Alexidze, a highly respected scientist, professor, public figure, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, founder of the International Law School of Georgia, Chief Adviser to the President of Georgia on International Law Issues, and Member of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences.”
