Academician Levan Alexidze Foundation celebrated Child Protection Day in cooperation with UNICEF
Levan Alexidze Foundation hosted Ghassan Khalil, the Representative of UNICEF in Georgia to inaugurate celebration week dedicated to Child Protection Day on 1 June 2021. The importance of recognising special needs of children while identifying them as independent subject of their own rights was highlighted in the discussion as a starting point. The evolution of the international system of child rights protection was scrutinised in the prism of the minimum standards the International Law sets for protection of rights of all humans. At the same time the discussion concerted around the importance of ensuring by the legislative and executive branches of governance that the internationally agreed minimum standards are advanced at the national level to best serve the best interests of children and make the Sustainable Development Goals real via targeted and wide investment in child rights protection.
Emphasising the contribution by Professor Levan Alexidze to the development of human rights protection system in Georgia, as well as in various capacities under the umbrellas of Council of Europe and the United Nations the very cooperation with UNICEF was particularly noted. It was recalled that to better communicate the spirit and content of the universal mechanism of child rights protection to Georgian readership among other contributions Academician Levan Alexidze was also a scientific co-editor of the Georgian translation of the book The Rights of the Child in International Law, as the translation was made possible with the support extended by UNICEF.
From the beginning of 2021, the Levan Alexidze Foundation has been dedicating its events that promote human rights and democratic standards to the commemoration of the 95th jubilee of the late Levan Alexidze, a highly respected scientist, professor, public figure, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, founder of the International Law School of Georgia, Chief Adviser to the President of Georgia on International Law Issues, and Member of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences.
