Levan Alexidze Foundation continues cooperation worldwide to promote women’s rights

Building-up on the well-established agenda of promoting women’s rights the Levan Alexidze Foundation joint forces with ELSA Ankara to mark the 10th anniversary of the opening for signature of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (also known as the Istanbul Convention).

The event was moreover a furtherance of the time-honoured cooperation between the Levan Alexidze Foundation and the European Law Students’ Association, which commenced with the cooperatively hosted Winter ELSA Law School Tbilisi on International Migration and Refugee Law, dedicated to Professor Levan Alexidze. The events at different times have among others been dedicated to the standards of refugee protection, problems related to occupation.

Good tradition of cooperation established pre-pandemic continued in different formats with different National Groups of ELSA. The Levan Alexidze Foundation presented the features of the landmark treaty within the event jointly initiated by ELSA Ankara and ELSA Heidelberg. Along with contextualising the drafting history of the Istanbul Convention, the novel mechanisms introduced by the Convention and their contribution to the promotion and protection of women’s rights were at the centre of the discussion.

The Levan Alexidze Foundation, along with peer reviews of the research outcomes, dedicates moot court competitions, academic conferences, discussion forums and space in the bi-lingual Levan Alexidze Journal of International Law to promotion of women’s rights and awareness raising around the respective international legal standards.
